So what is a second photographer and what do they do? A second photographer, also known as a second shooter, is someone who works alongside your primary wedding photographer. They help with everything from carrying the camera gear, to helping shoot the entire day. They are able to get more of the details and moments with the guests, while the main photographer can focus on the couple. I personally love having a second shooter to help assist me on wedding days.
So, let’s talk about it, here’s some of the reasons why you should consider taking your photographer up on having a second shooter present for your big day!
Different Angles and Points of Views
One of the biggest reasons to hire a second photographer for your wedding is that they are able to capture some special moments that just one photographer might not have had the opportunity to. For example, when the ceremony starts and the bride is walking down the aisle, it’s so important to catch the groom’s reaction but to also capture the bride’s reaction as well. Having two photographers there allows them to capture both moments! Sometimes photographers need to change out lenses or set up some lighting equipment, while they are doing this the second shooter is still able to get photos of everything going on! They’ll be able to get different angles and also take photos from their point of view. I try to cover as much as I can on a wedding day, but having a second pair of hands is SO helpful.
We can’t be at 2 places at once
Now I wish I there was some way I could do it all, but unfortunately, I can only be at one place at a time. Having a second photographer comes in handy when both the bride and groom are getting ready at the same time, but they’re at different locations. Us photographers can split up and cover both moments without having to change up the timeline of the day. This way nothing will be missed because i’m running back and forth trying to be at both locations.
More Photographers = More Photos
Two photographers equals more coverage, and more coverage equals more photos for you! We’re able to make sure everything is photographed and captured, which i’m definitely able to do alone, but it’s harder for just one photographer to do. Not only will there be more photos, but also a broader range of photos. With two people capturing your wedding day, we can get different points of views. While I’m taking photos of the bride and groom, my second shooter can be at the cocktail hour getting photos of the guests and taking detail shots.
Hopefully now you understand what a second shooter is and what they can provide on your wedding day. They really are a big help and offer so much!
